Can I hear messages while on a phone call?

Receipt of notifications and messages is dependent on the type of device, version of the OS, and type of network you are connected to. If you are using Zello through WiFi, you will always stay connected to Zello while on a call. If you are using cellular data on your device, depending on the carrier, you may or may not stay connected to Zello if you receive a call. Zello depends on the data to run.

Zello will never cut off a phone call to play a message on any device.

Android Devices

If you are using WiFi or a cellular network that can maintain an internet connection while on the call:

  • Status automatically changes to Busy status
  • Messages are received as a short vibrate, added to RECENTS, and played when the call is over
  • Call alerts are received as a long pulsated vibrate
  • Zello switches back to Available status after the call is over.

To allow Zello messages to play in the background while on a call, you can turn on this option by going to your Zello Work Management Console > Settings > Android > Allow messages playback during phone call.

Some carriers do not allow the cellular connection to be used while on a phone call, so Zello will not be able to play messages back in those instances.

iPhones

If you are using WiFi or a cellular network that can maintain an internet connection while on the call:

  • Your status will not change
  • You will see Zello notifications for all messages you receive while on a phone call
  • All messages will play as soon as you hang up the phone
  • You will receive a Zello call alert tone when you get a call alert. If your ringer is off, it will only be a vibrate.
